Among other things, Del is a big supporter of Alameda Soccer Club.
Currently there are 8 soccer fields on Alameda Point, including Hornet Field which the ASC made a $250,000 investment to build. In addition to capital funding, the ASC cost shares maintenance and upkeep at Hornet.
The SunCal plan calls for 4 soccer fields on the entire Point. This includes fields at the "Proposed" Sports Complex. EDITORIAL - I like how they keep that "Proposed" label on the Sports Complex. It's not a money maker for the developer, so I can only guess at the priority this component is given.
ASC currently provides youth sports activities for over 1200 boys AND girls. It is the single largest youth sports organization on the Island and in terms of co-ed opportunity it is the percentage leader by a large margin. When you take into account its affiliate Clubs in Jack London Youth Soccer Sports Leagues, over 7000 boys and girls in the Alameda/Oakland area are involved.
At a recent Planning Board meeting, ASC expressed its concerns over loss of 1/2 of its field inventory in the current SunCal proposal. Specifically in light of its own financial investments in field development. The plan simply ignores Hornet Field, showing it bulldozed over for natural space.
So, SunCal envisions 1000's of families moving into Alameda Point. Where are their kids going to play soccer? The fields available are already over-stressed and under maintained. ASC has served the youth sports community faithfully for over 20 years. It has made financial investments and proven itself to be a good steward and partner with the ARPD.
Latest word is that SunCal is postponing meetings with ASC. A final proposal is due to be delivered by SunCal on December 19? Do they risk the parents of 1200 kids opposing their plan when they find out there will be fewer places to play soccer? What of 20 years of alumni parents and players who still live in town? That's a pretty sizable voting block to contend with. Just observing...
